Unparalleled Ecotourism natural garden: a garden experience like no other
With Timandra being one of the main Portland tourism attractions in SW Victoria, one must ask ‘why?’ Timandra is not only Ecotourism and ATAP accredited, but it is a significant landscaping award winner for sustainability. As a bespoke tourism attraction, it is a Nature Based garden of excellence, Australia’s only Ecotourism accredited garden.
It is not a garden of roses and lots of flowers. Roses do not work with sustainability, although there remain a few in the Timandra plant mix. Timandra is full of a mixture of mainly natives that work with the climate and the existing soil. Biodiversity in all of its forms has been considered throughout.
Unlike other gardens that tend to be focussed at eye level or lower, Timandra is full of trees. This gives the garden a completely different ‘feel’ from other gardens. It provides a sanctuary within the space. Timandra is also totally in sync with biophilic design i.e. Biophilia is a love of life and the living world. A guided tour with Alison can help explain the sustainable attributes of Timandra, so consider getting a group together to enjoy Alison’s passionate delivery of her guided tour. It is an experience not worth missing during a visit to either Portland or Port Fairy. Her years of designing and hands-on gardening experience are inspirational knowledge, shared with those who partake in her tours.
Within the centre of the garden there is an illusion of being in a rainforest. This is where many of Timandra’s furry friends, the koalas can be found.
Timandra is a garden full of plants. As a sustainable garden these plants have been selected to work with the existing soil and prevailing weather conditions of the site.
As a significant award winner in 2014 for ‘The Sustainable Landscape’ with Landscaping Victoria, Timandra really is a garden of high standard. The added accreditation with Ecotourism and ATAP [the Australian National Accreditation Standard] denotes the high quality throughout this tourism attraction.
Timandra is a garden for adults and children alike. It is to be found at 82 Windham Street, Narrawong, 35 minutes west of Port Fairy. It is open to the public on a daily basis from 10am to 4pm, with an honour system at the gate. Entry is $10 per adult, with children free.
The whole garden is open to visitors who can wander, unhindered, within the one acre space. Ecotourism accredited guided tours are available by phoning Alison on 0418 825 625. And within the garden space, at the lower level, is the Alison Aplin Art Gallery housing Alison’s range of totally unique abstract art http://www.alisonaplinart.com.au
